It’s Day 4 of our adventure in Island Lake. Time is going by so fast…
Let me backtrack a little and describe how we got here. Last Saturday, Alessia, Bruno (EXEKO) and I got onto a small airplane bound for Winnipeg. We were the only ones wearing big winter coats and boots in an airport full of travellers in summer clothes, on their way to a sunny resort somewhere. After we landed in Winnipeg, we met up with Jody, from the Club.
The next day, the four of us left for Island Lake, this time in an even tinier plane. We flew north over islands bursting with evergreens – which presumably cover any trace of the brave explorers who once ventured through these lands. We landed in St. Theresa Point, where the Oji-Cree community greeted us with warm smiles.
When we got to our teacher’s unit, we were joined by Freddie, who used to work at the Club. Boy, had I missed him! His son, Matthew, was with him too. Matthew was at the Leadership Camp two years ago. He’s grown a lot since those days – he’s taller than I am now! We all had supper together and it was that night that we saw the Northern Lights for the first time, dancing in the night sky. So magical!
