At least $5 million required to meet the needs of Canadian children quickly and efficiently

Montreal, March 20, 2020 – Backed by its network of corporate partners, Breakfast Club of Canada is setting up an emergency fund to support breakfast program enrollees and local community organizations that assist food-insecure families and children throughout Canada during the COVID-19 crisis.

Some 250,000 students usually depend on the Club and its partners for a healthy breakfast every school morning, but the total number of children and youth across the country affected by food insecurity is actually greater than 1 million. To help minimize the repercussions of this crisis on them, Breakfast Club of Canada is reallocating the funds normally earmarked for schools to high-risk regions and established partners that are already well equipped to serve them.

In order to be able to address the needs of children for as long as possible during the crisis, Breakfast Club of Canada is turning to its corporate partners and the general public for help.

A number of partners have already stepped forward and announced a contribution to the Club’s emergency fund: belairdirect and Intact insurance $500k, Danone $200k and Kellogg Canada $150k. Other partners such as Sodexo – Stop Hunger Foundation also have offered their support.

Anyone who wants to contribute to the emergency fund can do so through the Club’s website.

Breakfast Club of Canada invites community organizations that wish to apply for a special grant to fill out an online application.

The emergency fund will:

  • Focus on food-insecure households with children across Canada, including those in Indigenous communities
  • Target high-need neighbourhoods
  • Be administered in collaboration with respected community organizations that are familiar with and rigorously apply hygiene and sanitation measures associated with handling food as well as the requirements developed by public health authorities to control the spread of COVID-19.

Quotes:

“Right now, we need to do everything we can to honour the pledge we made to children 25 years ago and make sure they get the nutrition they need to grow up healthy. We have built a strong network over time and we will be putting it to work now for their benefit.” – Daniel Germain, President and Founder, Breakfast Club of Canada

“Our front-line staff members and our partners are a tremendous resource for Canadian families during these trying times. More than ever, we need to be able to count on one another so we can deliver on our mission and feed children who are experiencing food insecurity.” – Tommy Kulczyk, Managing Director, Breakfast Club of Canada

“For many Canadians, food insecurity is a daily concern but during a crisis, it’s even more so. We are supporting Breakfast Club of Canada and their new emergency fund to ensure that resources are available to those in need.” – Anne Fortin, Senior Vice President, Direct Distribution, and Chief Marketing Officer, belairdirect and Intact insurance

“We feel that in these challenging times, children in Canada need us more than ever. Together with our employees across Canada, Danone believes that we can use our business as a force for good to help feed hungry children and provide them with an access to healthy food. ” – Dan Magliocco, President of Danone Canada

“As always, through our global Kellogg’s Better Days purpose platform, we help deliver critical nourishment to families when they need it most. We are proud to support the efforts of our longstanding partners, Breakfast Club of Canada, to help ensure Canadian families and children continue to get access to the food they need during this unprecedented time.” – Tony Chow, President, Kellogg Canada Inc.

Long-time BCC ambassadors committed to helping food-insecure children across the country have access to healthy nutrition during the COVID-19 crisis

Montreal, March 23, 2020 – Dedicated Breakfast Club of Canada ambassadors Carey and Angela Price have generously announced a $50,000 donation from their Foundation to the Club’s emergency fund to help feed children across Canada during the COVID-19 crisis. The Price family has been involved with the Club for over five years through a variety of initiatives including Shooting for the Stars, an event created in collaboration with the Air Canada Foundation that lets children from Indigenous communities enjoy an incredible week-long experience in Montreal with their hockey hero, and an annual fundraiser of the same name held in Kelowna, B.C. – which to date has raised more than $820,000 to support the Club’s mission.

“We are lucky to have everything we do, when so many people lack access to healthy food. We feel compelled to do our part so that the most vulnerable children and communities in the country, including Indigenous communities, aren’t victims of food insecurity during this crisis,” said Angela Price.

“It’s incredible to be able to count on the support of the Carey and Angela Price Foundation. They’ve been so generous to Breakfast Club of Canada over the years, and this shows once again how invested they are in our mission. I sincerely hope that Angela and Carey’s act of generosity will inspire others to do the same,” said Daniel Germain, President and Founder of Breakfast Club of Canada.

Some 250,000 students usually depend on the Club and its partners for a healthy breakfast every school morning, but the total number of children and youth across the country affected by food insecurity is a greater than 1 million.

At least $5 million is required to meet the needs of Canadian children and families immediately.

To help minimize the repercussions of this crisis on families in need, the Club is supporting local community organizations, who need more financial support than ever, as extra precautions drastically increase the cost of providing each meal.

The Club is calling on the community and corporate partners to help support children in this time of need. For those looking to join the Price family in contributing to the emergency fund, donations can be made through the Club’s website here, or by texting CLUB to 20222 to make a $5 or $20 donation.

To minimize the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on this vulnerable segment of the population, the Club will be issuing special grants through this emergency fund, which community organizations looking for support for their food programs can apply for here.

The emergency fund will:

  • Focus on food-insecure households with children across Canada, including those in Indigenous communities
  • Target high-need neighbourhoods
  • Be administered in collaboration with respected community organizations that are familiar with and rigorously apply hygiene and sanitation measures associated with handling food as well as the requirements developed by public health authorities to control the spread of COVID-19

More than 50 organizations have already applied for assistance from the Club.

Government of Canada announces multimillion-dollar funding package to ensure children and families have access to food during this crisis

Montréal, April 3, 2020 – Today, the Government of Canada took an important step to protect our children and families who are currently facing food insecurity by announcing $100 million in relief for the Canadians who need it most.

$5 million has been allocated to Breakfast Club of Canada through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to support breakfast program enrollees and local community organizations that assist food-insecure families.

“Since this crisis began, Breakfast Club of Canada and multiple partners across the country have been working tirelessly to ensure kids who depend on school meal programs have access to healthy food during the pandemic,’’ said Daniel Germain, President and Founder of Breakfast Club of Canada. ‘’The mass mobilization and acts of solidarity we have seen on the ground in the face of such challenging times is truly awe-inspiring and makes me incredibly proud to call myself a Canadian. Today’s $5 million commitment from the federal government will allow Breakfast Club of Canada for the next few weeks to continue working with collaborators to feed kids and support the families who need it most.’’

While hundreds of thousands of students usually depend on the Club and its partners for a healthy breakfast every school morning, the total number of children and youth across the country affected by food insecurity is actually greater than 1 million. COVID-19 has hit the most vulnerable Canadians the hardest, and these families and communities require dedicated support during these challenging times to ensure that no child goes hungry.

Our front-line team members, dedicated volunteers and hundreds of community organizations are working around the clock to make sure families don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

To combat this crisis, Breakfast Club of Canada has created an online emergency relief fund to help families access the funding they need to be administered through a Special Grants Initiative. Individuals can access this initiative through an online portal, located on Breakfast Club of Canada’s website, specifically designed for the COVID-19 crisis.

As the world waits for things to settle, hunger continues and there is no safe place for children to ride out the storm. Alongside our partners, allied organizations and today’s investment from the federal government we will all strive to ensure no child or family faces food insecurity during COVID-19.

Montreal, May 12, 2020 – Since April 29, Uber has been putting its network of drivers to good use by having them deliver food to families in need on behalf of local community organizations. A total of 80,000 deliveries will make it possible for food bank items to be dropped off directly to the doorstep of families and children who might otherwise go hungry.

Deliveries have been spread out over the provinces and major Canadian cities based on the respective proportion of people in food-insecure households, with the aim of making sure a maximum number of families will benefit from this gift.

“With hundreds of thousands of Canadian families experiencing food insecurity as a result of the health crisis, organizations like Breakfast Club of Canada need our help more now than ever before,” said Matthew Price, General Manager of Uber Canada. “Uber Canada welcomes the opportunity to partner with Breakfast Club of Canada and support the families in need.”

“Since schools were shuttered across Canada, we have continued to team up with our partners to ensure kids get enough to eat,” said Tommy Kulczyk, Managing Director of Breakfast Club of Canada. “Their needs are on the rise. We have to keep helping one another. The fact that a company like Uber is offering this delivery service and making sure food gets to families who need it is a wonderful act of kindness.”

Uber has pledged over $6M in free rides, meals, and food deliveries for healthcare workers, seniors, and people in need across Canada. To encourage safety and cleanliness throughout the delivery process, Uber drivers have passed a background check and have been given clear instructions from public health officials about cleaning and disinfection products.

Breakfast Club of Canada set up an emergency fund on March 20 to lend a helping hand to schools and organizations working on the ground, after breakfast programs were suspended in light of school closures. More than 1,000 funding applications have been received thus far from hundreds of organizations and schools from coast to coast. Donations to Breakfast Club of Canada can be made through their website.

Montreal, June 3, 2020 – Cantine pour tous and Breakfast Club of Canada are pleased to be working together to feed families in the Greater Montreal. With the situation in the area still a cause for worry, the Club will be reallocating $120,000 of the funding received from the Ville de Montréal to Cantine pour tous and its network so they can support 5,000 extra families every week through the distribution of meals and other food items.

Partners for the past two years, Cantine pour tous and Breakfast Club of Canada share the same goal of making sure children have access to healthy food. In response to the COVID-19 crisis, and in collaboration with dozens of partners and organizations, they have teamed up to leverage one another’s strengths and reach out to as many children and families as possible.

“Our member organizations are well established in their respective communities and closely attuned to their local realities and specific requirements,” said Thibaud Liné, Director of Cantine pour tous. “They are in the best position to identify and quickly address the needs of vulnerable groups in their community, which is particularly important and necessary in crisis situations like this one.”

“Since lockdown measures went into effect, the Club has been working hand in hand with stakeholders at all levels to do more for children,” said Marie-Claude Bienvenue, Vice-President, Government Affairs, Quebec, and Municipal Affairs at Breakfast Club of Canada. “To ensure that no child is food insecure, we are working to put concrete solutions in place with partners like Cantine pour tous to feed children wherever they are.”

“The Ville de Montréal is proud to support this joint effort of Breakfast Club of Canada and Cantine pour tous, which will help feed 5,000 families in our community,” said Mayor Valérie Plante. “For weeks, we have been working with the health network and our community partners to keep this public health crisis from becoming a humanitarian crisis. The Ville de Montréal is committed to being flexible and adjusting to changing circumstances to meet the needs of vulnerable populations. I applaud this initiative, which is aimed at delivering a tangible solution to the food insecurity faced by children and their families.”

MONTREAL, Quebec, June 10, 2020 – The TELUS Friendly Future Foundation has donated $100,000 to contribute towards Breakfast Club of Canada’s effort in supporting Canadian children and families through the current pandemic. While the Club usually reaches over 240,000 children daily through school nutrition programs, the COVID-19 crisis provided a gateway into rethinking how they help children access nutritious foods.

“When schools closed in March, Breakfast Club of Canada’s efforts were immediately focused on finding new ways to reach children and to continue our mission to feed kids in vulnerable situations,” said Daniel Germain, President and Founder of Breakfast Club of Canada. “We quickly created an Emergency Fund and experienced an overwhelming response from many partners who took action and contributed in this effort. We thank the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation for making sure that the increasing needs of communities across Canada are met and that we all get through this tough situation. I wish to thank everyone who is doing their part and continue to work very hard to ensure we reach as many children as possible even in these difficult times. Together, we can take the burden and insecurity off families’ shoulders and bring them hope and smiles.”

This amount will contribute to the Breakfast Club of Canada Emergency Fund, which has allowed for over $8 million to be given to 900 schools and community organizations to ensure children do not suffer from food insecurity through the pandemic.

“During this unprecedented public health emergency, we are especially focused on supporting our communities’ and enabling urgent funding where it is needed most,” said Dee Brown, Executive Director, TELUS Friendly Future Foundation. “Supporting Breakfast Club of Canada and their Emergency Fund is one way we are doing our part in helping organizations across Canada support those most affected by the impact of COVID-19. TELUS Friendly Future Foundation commends Breakfast Club of Canada for its impressive work and for taking care of children and families across the country.”

From parents who have recently lost their income to those who were already struggling to make ends meet before the pandemic, these actions truly help all Canadians. To read testimonials from people helped by Breakfast Club of Canada Emergency Fund, follow us on Facebook and Instagram.
