JOB DESCRIPTION
Breakfast Club of Canada is looking for a Government Relations Advisor for a maternity leave replacement lasting 12 to 16 months, depending on the starting date. Reporting to the Co-Founder and Director, Government Relations, and working closely with the Vice-President, Government and Municipal Relations, the selected candidate will help develop and expand the Club’s reach and impact at the federal, provincial and territorial government levels. They will support the Government Relations team with strategic and operational efforts, and help deliver optimal results by analyzing opportunities, gathering data, forging technical and strategic ties, drafting recommendations and following up on meetings.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, organize and attend internal meetings with elected officials and various stakeholders.
- Draft meeting reports; support the Government Relations team in implementing designated actions and following up on designated matters, in documenting various activities and in forging purpose-driven strategic and operational connections.
- Work closely with other departments, including the Communications Department, on public affairs initiatives.
- Plan and follow up on key events (booth at the Quebec National Assembly, Breakfast on the Hill in Ottawa, etc.) and visits to school breakfast programs for elected officials.
- Draft communications tools aimed at various audiences, including elected officials (letters, press releases, newsletters, presentations, social media posts, etc.).
- Help flesh out government relations and public affairs strategies.
- Analyze various government agreements; keep a record of follow-ups to be carried out; work with the Programs and Finance teams on deliverables within specified timeframes; track agreements and opportunities in the CRM system (Salesforce).
- Contribute to maintaining and updating the government relations database and facilitate the implementation of various procedures and processes.
- Follow political and governmental news; track select parliamentary initiatives.
- Analyze and monitor the political and media landscape to identify key issues, relevant topics and positions of decision-making bodies and interest groups; ensure the relevant information is taken into account in all communications operations; suggest actions to take based on this information.
- Carry out related tasks to ensure the Government Relations Department runs smoothly.
SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in political science, public relations or another relevant discipline.
- Two to five years of relevant experience in government relations and/or public affairs.
- Excellent understanding of the media and political landscape at the provincial, territorial and federal level.
- Fluency in French and English (English is required for meetings several times a month with colleagues and stakeholders across Canada).
- Excellent writing skills in both French and English.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Knowledge of the school and community environment, an asset.
- Must have a driver’s license and access to a car for occasional trips.
