Boucherville– October 14th, 2022

As the Back-to-School season is ending and students are back in the classroom, Staples Canada just finished its annual fundraiser. Thanks to the dedication of their associates and customers, Staples raised $268,571 to help maintain breakfast programs from coast to coast.

“Thanks to partners like Staples/Bureau en Gros, Breakfast Club of Canada makes it possible for children to start their school day with an equal chance.” highlights Tommy Kulczyk President & CEO of Breakfast Club of Canada. “Education and health, especially for children, are core values for Staples/Bureau en Gros and this fundraising campaign is a strong asset in the Club’s mission to bring awareness about student nutrition, especially when we know that learning is easier on a full stomach ”

With inflation currently at a multi-decade high, the cost of food, transportation and living are rising, and Breakfast Club of Canada will struggle to maintain its support to existing school nutrition programs this year.

All managers and associates in the participating Staples Canada and Bureau en Gros stores across Quebec and the Atlantic provinces joined forces to contribute to the campaign. From August 7th to September 11th, they encouraged customers to donate by bringing awareness with one goal in mind: breakfast for every child, every day.

“At Staples, we believe that the back-to-school season should be a time of excitement and wonder. However, we know that this is not the case for all parents, teachers, and students as they struggle to provide children with the resources to help support a successful school year,” said Wanda Walkden, Chief Human Resources and Communications Officer, Staples Canada. “As Canada’s Back to School Destination, the School Supply Drive, which just wrapped up another successful fundraising campaign, allowed our stores to team up with charitable partners, like Breakfast Clubs of Canada, helping make a sizable, tangible impact in the Quebec and Atlantic Canada markets supporting communities where we live and work, empowering learning and growth for the year ahead.”

Kids putting hands together on the table

Boucherville – September 22nd, 2022 – Today, Breakfast Club of Canada is launching an ambitious back-to-school fundraising campaign in partnership with Walmart Canada to raise money to help advance the Club’s mission and get closer to the ultimate goal: breakfast for every child, every day.

With food, transport and the overall cost of living getting increasingly expensive, breakfast programs are becoming more costly to sustain. These steep cost increases are having a significant impact on the Club’s operations and, the school nutrition ecosystem is now even more reliant on individual and corporate contributions.

Walmart is inviting its customers to participate in this year’s campaign from September 22 to October 14 by donating at the checkout in-store and online on Walmart.ca. The retailer will also generously contribute an additional $1 million to school breakfast programs in communities across Canada. Walmart Canada is Breakfast Club of Canada’s largest corporate partner with more than 400 stores across the country and more than 100,000 associates supporting the cause from coast-to-coast-to-coast.

“With sky-high inflation, Canadian families are struggling more than ever to make ends meet,” said Paul Lethbridge, Director, Corporate & Community Giving at Breakfast Club of Canada. “Every year, Walmart Canada’s associates and customers rally around our mission to help us serve millions of nutritious morning meals to kids across the country. We’re very grateful for Walmart’s unwavering support.”

The Club and its partners such as Walmart continue to raise awareness about the importance of access to nutritious food for children while continuing to reach a considerable number of students that have benefitted from these programs over the past few years. Breakfast Club of Canada is a unifying force for partners, schools and individual donors to ensure that children have access to healthy food throughout the school year. But it can only do so with a strong network and generous support.

For the past 20 years, Walmart Canada has worked with Breakfast Club of Canada, raising more than $60 million. This long-lasting partnership is a major support for the Club and its over 3,500 school nutrition programs across the country which help reach over 580,000 children each morning.

”We are absolutely committed to delivering on our mission to help families live better. This is even more vital during these challenging economic times where it’s become more difficult for people to provide for their families,” said Rob Nicol, Vice President, Communications and Corporate Affairs at Walmart Canada. “Together, with Breakfast Club of Canada, we are helping ensure more children can eat nutritious breakfasts, so they are fueled to learn.”

The organization launches its annual fundraising campaign in order to continue to support children across Canada in the face of a significant financial shortfall.

Boucherville, August 23, 2022 – Amid decade-high inflation, Breakfast Club of Canada is launching an ambitious Back-to-School fundraising campaign to continue supporting school nutrition programs and ensure that children go to school with a healthy breakfast.

The Club and its partners currently help to reach more than 580,000 children each morning in over 3,500 school nutrition programs. There are also a couple hundred schools on the Club’s waitlist for such a program and the list continues to increase.

Due to an increase in operating costs related to the pandemic, the expansion of the scope of programs and rising food costs, the organization will struggle to maintain support for existing breakfast programs during the upcoming school year.

These steep cost increases are having a significant impact on the Club’s operations and in the absence of a National School Food Program and temporary emergency funding from the government, the school nutrition ecosystem is even more reliant on individual and corporate contributions.

“We are currently experiencing a perfect storm of obstacles that is having a substantial impact on our operations and our ability to support programs,” explains Tommy Kulczyk, President and CEO of Breakfast Club of Canada. “Our expenses for food, equipment and transportation are increasing at a faster rate than our revenues and breakfast programs are becoming more expensive to maintain.”

A Shortfall of A Couple Million Dollars

According to revenue projections, in order to maintain its support for school nutrition programs already backed in part by the Club, the organization anticipates a significant financial shortfall for the 2022-2023 school year. At this time, no new additional breakfast programs can be supported by the Club in schools over the coming school year.

“In 27 years of existence, the Club has never broken its promise to the children,” declares Judith Barry, Co-Founder and Director, Government Relations at Breakfast Club of Canada. “More than ever, the Club needs the support of public and private donors to help feed children in a context where they are often the most vulnerable.”

The Back-to-School Campaign, the Club’s largest fundraising campaign of the year, will run over the next eight weeks. To make a donation:

The organization is recognized for its promotion of Quebec food products and for its sourcing from local food partners.

Boucherville, June 23, 2022 – As the school year comes to a close, Breakfast Club of Canada is proud to announce its participation in the Aliments du Québec au menu recognition program for its promotion of Quebec food products in its menus and its 72% sourcing from local food partners.

“The Club recognizes the importance of promoting Quebec foods in order to promote healthy, local and sustainable food in breakfast programs in Quebec,” explains Tommy Kulczyk, President and CEO at Breakfast Club of Canada. “The well-being and development of children are our priorities and being able to accomplish our mission while offering local products that meet the highest standards in terms of nutritional requirements is a great accomplishment. We are very proud of this important recognition which allows us to continue to nurture the potential of children in Quebec.”

The Aliments du Québec au menu program, developed by Aliments du Québec and Équiterre, with the support of the ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation du Québec, recognizes institutions that put Quebec products on the menu in their service. This program also includes a support component that allows the Club to establish longer-term targets and to be monitored in achieving them.

By joining the Aliments du Québec au menu program, the Club recognizes the importance of the national Quebec food purchasing strategy by promoting Quebec products in its breakfast programs and demonstrates its clear commitment to maintaining and expanding its network of close partners. The organization is working to maintain this supply of foods from Quebec and continues to collaborate with the agri-food ecosystem to add more whenever possible.

Back in person, the event brought together participants from the business and educational sectors to benefit the cause

Boucherville, April 14, 2022 – This morning, at the Hôtel Mortagne, in compliance with local sanitary measures, hundreds of people from the educational and business communities took part in the 16th edition of the Déjeuner des Grands event. As life continues to be marked by the effects of the pandemic and rising food prices, people in Quebec continue to demonstrate their dedication to the cause and be present for the well-being of children.

The event, which returned in person this year, was held in the form of a morning show hosted by Benoît Gagnon, radio host and Club ambassador, celebrating 25 years with the organization. Several special guests and Club ambassadors participated, including Geneviève Everell, author, speaker, CEO and chef-owner of Sushi à la maison, Laurent Paquin, comedian, Thomas Nepveu, professional karting driver, Philippe Langlois, founder and owner of Philippe & Co. and the group 2Frères who put on a musical performance.

“It is events like this that make me particularly proud to have been a Breakfast Club of Canada ambassador for the past 25 years,” explains Benoît Gagnon. “Seeing the community come together and rally around the cause is something really special. As a father, I am very proud to be part of this important event.”

The event brought together participants from all regions of Quebec with the goal of giving children the energy they need to learn. An impressive total of $85,946 was raised this year thanks to the generosity of all the participants.

In order to shine a light on the realities and the challenges that the Club faces, Benoît Gagnon welcomed Tommy Kulczyk, President and CEO of Breakfast Club of Canada to discuss the issues, the growing needs and the positive impacts of breakfast programs.

“In Quebec, the Club reaches more than 67,000 children in over 480 programs each day, but the needs continue to grow,” said Tommy Kulczyk. “The Club wants to ensure that it can continue to reach the considerable number of children who currently benefit from a breakfast program and extend its reach. The goal is to provide constant support and help children achieve their full potential. It is by working together with our important partners, donors, volunteers and other stakeholders that we will achieve this.”

Four children

Boucherville – April 7, 2022 – Today, the Government of Canada renewed its commitment to working in the coming year with provinces, territories, municipalities, Indigenous partners and other stakeholders to develop a National School Nutritious Meal Program. The Club welcomes this mention in Federal Budget 2022, which marks another step towards a future where no child starts their day on an empty stomach.

“As many stakeholders, the Club has worked tirelessly to put the needs of children in Canada on the national agenda,” explains Judith Barry, Co-Founder and Director, Government Relations at Breakfast Club of Canada. “Budget 2022 recognizes that children cannot and must not start their day on an empty stomach. Thank you, Prime Minister Trudeau, and Minister Freeland, for making children’s food access in Canada a priority so that they can get they energy they need to learn.”

It takes an entire team to effectively promote access to nutritious food for children. Partners, donors and other stakeholders represent real financial leverage in the approach for government funding, as the Club’s success is based on combined efforts from all. This commitment from the Government of Canada would never have been possible without your commitment to children across the country.
