Jean-Luc Mongrain, the voice of those who were not heard
Breakfast Club of Canada pays tribute to an exceptional man who used the accuracy and power of his words to support the most vulnerable, becoming a true ambassador for children.
Boucherville, Quebec, October 13, 2026 – It is with deep sadness and immense gratitude that Breakfast Club of Canada pays tribute to Jean-Luc Mongrain, who passed away at the age of 75.
Jean-Luc Mongrain was a man of conviction, of rare integrity and profound human sensitivity. His outrage at injustice was as sincere as it was profound. An outstanding communicator, he possessed that uncommon ability to make his words resonate far beyond the screen. When he exposed injustice, his words reached people’s consciences, challenged assumptions and called for action. It was impossible to listen to him without feeling compelled to respond.
Throughout his career, he gave his powerful voice to those who were all too often overlooked. Among them, children held a very special place.
A Voice for Children
“We forget that the greatest natural wealth we have is our children,” he used to say.
Jean-Luc Mongrain was outraged that children could still attend school with empty stomachs, unable to concentrate, silently bearing the weight of circumstances beyond their control. A burden no child should ever have to bear.
”The fact that there are still children who do not eat breakfast is a great injustice,” he asserted.
Children have no platform from which to speak out against the inequalities they face. Jean-Luc Mongrain chose to put his own platform at their service. He refused to let their reality remain unseen and forcefully reminded people that their wellbeing was not a matter of charity, but a collective responsibility.
A Mug that Became a Symbol of Solidarity
His famous coffee mug was his trademark on television. Jean-Luc Mongrain had the idea of turning it into a symbol of solidarity with children by adding Breakfast Club of Canada logo, thereby raising the profile of the cause far beyond the television screen.
This initiative launched a major awareness-raising and fundraising campaign. For over fifteen years, the sale of mugs bearing the Club’s colours has allowed the people of Quebec to take concrete action in support of the cause. Every morning, by displaying his mug on screen, Jean-Luc helped to raise the profile of the Club and rally the public behind its mission.
More than just a promotional item, this mug became an icon of Breakfast Club of Canada and a powerful symbol of Jean-Luc Mongrain’s lasting commitment.
“This campaign is close to my heart!” he would say.
And it was deeply close to his heart. Born of his convictions and his refusal to accept injustice, this initiative transformed an everyday object into a collective movement of solidarity.
He dreamed, moreover, of the day when no child would need such help. In his eyes, that would be the greatest success of all.
The Legacy of an Exceptional Man
Jean-Luc Mongrain left his mark on generations of Quebecers through his courage, his outspokenness and his refusal to accept indifference.
He leaves behind far more than the memory of a formidable communicator, but one of a man who knew how to find the right words, express them with the full force of his convictions, and use his voice as a powerful tool for solidarity, reminding an entire society of its responsibility towards the most vulnerable.
“Jean-Luc Mongrain was a man of exceptional calibre. His words carried incredible weight because they were rooted in uncompromising integrity and profound sincerity. We had the immense privilege of counting him amongst the most devoted champions of children. He never merely defended their cause with words. He dedicated himself to it with a determination and generosity that commanded admiration. The children he helped may never know his name. But they will have benefited from the voice he chose to give them. It is a priceless legacy, for which we will always be deeply grateful to him”, says Julie Desharnais, President and Chief Executive Officer of Breakfast Club of Canada.
The entire Breakfast Club of Canada family extends its deepest condolences to his wife, his family, his loved ones and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Mr Mongrain, you gave a voice to those who were all too often forgotten. You reminded society as a whole that children are our greatest natural resource and that they deserve our full attention.
Your voice has fallen silent. But your fight continues.
Thank you, Mr Mongrain.
