MONTREAL – August 20, 2020 –

    • Due to COVID-19, the number of children going to class on an empty stomach has increased from over 1 million to now over 2 million
    • This back-to-school season, Breakfast Club of Canada is rallying the support of local partners, schools, companies, and Canadians to deliver innovative food programs across the country

TodayBreakfast Club of Canada launches its Back-to-School campaign ‘’Don’t Let Hunger Get in Their Way’’ to mobilize its partners along with Canadians to ensure all kids start their day nourished this fall. Building on its mission of feeding students’ potential and giving all children an equal chance of success, the Club is calling on Canadians’ generosity to support its network of local schools and charities to deliver innovative food programs across the country, no matter how the school year unfolds

Back-to-school is supposed to be exciting time and a fresh start for studentsHowever, given the pandemic, not having enough food is a major concern for some children and their families,” says Tommy Kulczyk, General Manager of Breakfast Club of Canada. “COVID has severely disrupted the economy and caused severe job loss. We know many families are struggling even more than before to put food on the table. Children are among the most vulnerable, but we can’t let hunger get in their way.”

According to Breakfast Club of Canada, more than one million children across the country were going to school on an empty stomach before COVID. Now, the Club is forecasting a drastic increase to over two million for the coming school year. That’s a jump from one in four children to more than one in every three children who will be going to school on an empty stomach.

“We need collective and creative solutions to feed all children during this time of crisis – the alternative is potential negative long-term and permanent impact to both their mental and physical health. For example, hunger limits children’s cognition including the ability to focus and retain information and can also impact their ability to regulate emotions. I am so encouraged by the work Breakfast Club of Canada is doing and the support we have seem from the public during the pandemic,” says Lindsay PleskotRegistered Dietitian and parent.

The Emergency Fund that the Club launched in March in response to COVID-19 has helped to provide food to over half a million children over the past few months through supporting and collaborating with over 1,000 local organizations and schools cross Canada. With schools re-opening under various regional modelsthe Club’s network has adapted its food delivery services for breakfast programs to minimize risks and physical contact. Based on successes and learnings from restarting breakfast programs in Quebec last May, this includes only distributing individually packaged meals, food to be served in classrooms to allow for proper social distancing and limiting the menu to cold items only.

‘’As a mom of twins, I know how important healthy food is for my kids. Even as we’ve been sheltering at home, they are constantly learning, playing, running, they NEVER STOP! All of that requires fuel for their growing bodies and brain.  That’s why the work Breakfast Club of Canada is doing is more important now than ever. Let’s make sure all our children can have the fuel they need to feed their potential,” says Breakfast Club of Canada spokesperson and comedian, Jessi Cruickshank.

“For over 25 years, Breakfast Club of Canada has been providing meals to students before class every morning. No matter what this school year looks like, let’s not let hunger put our children’s future on hold. We hope families and donors across Canada will join us in giving every child an equal chance to succeed this year, says Kulczyk

Ottawa, Ontario, July 21, 2020 – Thanks to those who are buying recognition medals to express gratitude to an essential worker or a special someone making a difference through the COVID-19 pandemic, the Royal Canadian Mint is making an initial donation of 0,000 to  Breakfast Club of Canada.

At a time when many Canadians cannot give a hug or say ‘thanks’ in person, these medals are a tangible way for people to express their appreciation, while raising money for an organization fighting childhood hunger. The Mint is donating all net proceeds from the sale of each medal to the Breakfast Club of Canada Emergency Fund in support of children and families who are facing food insecurity now and in the months to come, due to the repercussions of COVID-19.

“I am deeply touched by the response of Canadians to this project that has been a personal labour of love for the employees of the Royal Canadian Mint,” said Marie Lemay, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “The 0,000 donation we are making today to Breakfast Club is just a start and I look forward to increasing this donation as people continue to recognize those who they feel deserve a medal.”

“As many Canadians, we had to adapt our services at Breakfast Club of Canada to ensure we reach as many children and families to support their growing needs to feed themselves,” said Daniel Germain, President and Founder of Breakfast Club of Canada. “In 25 years, it is the first time we can continue to feed children over the summer, which is proof of how much the mission of Breakfast Club of Canada is essential. We are deeply touched by all the support we are receiving, and we thank the Canadian Royal Mint and all their employees for this recognition of the Club’s work. Together, let’s lift the burden of food insecurity off the shoulders of children and families to replace them with hope and smiles.’’

The Recognition Medal retails for .95 and all net proceeds go Breakfast Club of Canada. It is a nickel-plated steel medal that includes a magnet, so that it can be proudly worn, on either meticulously engraved side, by its deserving recipient.

On one side is a heart and maple leaf icon representing the collective spirit of Canadians. The maple leaf and heart as one symbolize Canadians coming together in embrace as we help those in need. A complex array of micro-mirrors covering the heart creates a pulsating light effect that evokes Canada’s strong heartbeat.

The second side represents our nation’s grateful spirit. The heart in the centre of the group symbolizes Canadians coming together in appreciation for our essential workers. We recognize their dedication and bravery, and the micro text represents the thankful voices of a nation.

In Ottawa alone, the Mint’s Recognition Medal has touched a number of special Canadians:

Linda – Registered Nurse, Queensway Carleton Hospital
“Our COVID-19 Testing Centre opened in March, and I really wanted to be more involved and join the fight, so volunteered to work there. It has been very fulfilling and satisfying, as I feel like I am a small piece in the huge puzzle of defeating this virus. It’s awesome that the Mint has created this Recognition Medal. Absolutely awesome. It’s really wonderful to be recognized and valued this way, and it’s really an honour. This medal will be a treasured keepsake that can be passed down to your kids.”

Rigoberto – Bus Operator, OC Transpo
“I have had many passengers extend their thanks to me for working throughout the pandemic and it means a great deal to me, as it shows the togetherness needed to get through this time.

Though working through this time has had its challenges, I appreciate the Royal Canadian Mint recognizing my efforts and those of all essential workers.”

Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng – ICU and Palliative Care Physician, Ottawa Hospital and Monfort Hospital
“The fact that we are being seen for the work that we do, especially in a time during a pandemic when more is being asked of us, and that the nation is willing to recognize the work that we’re doing, is just so humbling. It’s empowering to know that the nation’s behind you just gives us more inspiration, more incentive, more juice to really step up and do what we need to do for our patients.”

All net proceeds to be donated to Breakfast Club of Canada’s Emergency Fund for COVID-19

Ottawa, Ontario, June 29, 2020 – As we all know someone who deserves a medal for helping keep us safe, healthy and connected during the COVID-19 pandemic, Royal Canadian Mint employees have rallied together to create a wearable recognition medal.

At a time when many Canadians cannot give a hug or say ‘thanks’ in person, these medals are a tangible way for people to express their gratitude, while also helping reduce hunger among children. The Mint will donate all net proceeds from the sale of each medal to Breakfast Club of Canada’s emergency funding in support of children and families who are facing food insecurity now and in the months to come, due to the repercussions of COVID-19.

To be worn with pride by essential workers and everyone else who has worked so hard to keep Canadians healthy, safe, well-stocked and connected during the pandemic, this heartfelt token of appreciation may be purchased as of today.

“This project is a meaningful way for the Mint to contribute to a cause that is helping Canadians from coast to coast to coast and to say a sincere, tangible thank you to the people who keep making a difference for all of us during this pandemic,” said Marie Lemay, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. “This is a true team effort led by countless Mint employees who donated their time, skills and expertise and I couldn’t be more proud to join them in recognizing truly special Canadians while raising much-needed funds for Breakfast Club of Canada.”

“Throughout this crisis, we have been very moved by all the shows of community spirit and hard work that have been vital in protecting some of the country’s most vulnerable families,” said Daniel Germain, President and Founder of Breakfast Club of Canada. “At Breakfast Club of Canada, we have been responsive to the needs of hundreds of thousands of children for the past 25 years, and we are proud to have upheld this tradition during these challenging times. But our work is far from done. It is an honour for us to be considered by the Royal Canadian Mint as a quiet force supporting children and families across the country.”

The 2020 Recognition Medal started with a spark of an idea to leverage the Mint’s unique coin-making skills to craft an artful and meaningful medal that could be given to those who make it possible to safely continue our everyday lives throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.  The idea soon inspired scores of employees in Ottawa and Winnipeg, to band together for a once-in-a-lifetime project to show Canada’s appreciation as only the Royal Canadian Mint can.

The result is a nickel-plated steel medal that includes a magnet, so that it can be proudly worn, on either meticulously engraved side, by its deserving recipient.

By concentrating on the use of available resources to make the medal -from spare materials to employees volunteering to package the medal, the Mint has also helped maximize its fundraising for Breakfast Club of Canada.

Complete background on this project, including videos and still photography can be found here.

The recognition medal can be ordered directly from the Mint at 1-800-267-1871 in Canada,
1-800-268-6468 in the US, or on the Mint’s web site at www.mint.ca. It is also available at participating Canada Post locations or through TD Canada Trust and the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.

Mint employees also had this to say:

Yannick Cormier, R+D Project Engineer (Ottawa):
“My mom is a nurse who is working in an establishment that had declared Covid-19 cases and for me; it was an honour to be able to add my contribution on the recognition medal. It was a pleasure and nothing compared to what the front line workers have to do to work on a weekend to achieve this beautiful piece of recognition.“

Thalia Bouris, Production Operations Training Coordinator (Ottawa) and one of hundreds of employee volunteers who packaged recognition medals with their families:
“It is an incredible and meaningful gesture that also teaches our kids the importance of caring for your community and lending a hand when needed.  It shows that even small gestures such as volunteering your time can make a huge difference in someone’s life.”

Susan Aubry, Marketing Services Manager (Ottawa) and member of the medal design team:
“Not since the Olympics 10 years ago have I felt like I am a part of something quite so important.  This is an historic moment and I’m proud to have had the opportunity to contribute.
I spent a lot of time thinking about the design and it was truly an emotional experience.”

Alex Tirabasso, Engraver (Ottawa):
“The best part of this experience was seeing how our teams and colleagues rallied together for a cause that was bigger than ourselves; that is, in showing, in our own way, our respect and recognition to our health care front-line workers.”
“The sweet sugar coating to this experience will be to hopefully see the smiles of our health care workers when they receive these medallions.”

Jean-Paul Collette, Die Production Operator (Winnipeg):
“This is one of the most rewarding things I’ve worked on.  It connects directly with people that we know and I feel proud being able to say ‘we made this for you’ It’s a special feeling to be able to have done that.”

Chris Bruneau, Coining Operator (Winnipeg):
“It is definitely a special opportunity to take part in this. It is something we’ll remember for the rest of our lives.  I thought the heart was fantastic in the way it really pops off the medal.”

While the Club usually reaches over 240,000 children daily through school nutrition programs, the COVID-19 crisis provided a gateway into rethinking how they help children access nutritious foods.

We thank the TELUS Friendly Future Foundation for making sure that the increasing needs of communities across Canada are met and that we all get through this tough situation. I wish to thank everyone who is doing their part and continue to work very hard to ensure we reach as many children as possible even in these difficult times. Montreal, May 12, 2020 – Since April 29, Uber has been putting its network of drivers to good use by having them deliver food to families in need on behalf of local community organizations. A total of 80,000 deliveries will make it possible for food bank items to be dropped off directly to the doorstep of families and children who might otherwise go hungry.

Deliveries have been spread out over the provinces and major Canadian cities based on the respective proportion of people in food-insecure households, with the aim of making sure a maximum number of families will benefit from this gift.

“With hundreds of thousands of Canadian families experiencing food insecurity as a result of the health crisis, organizations like Breakfast Club of Canada need our help more now than ever before,” said Matthew Price, General Manager of Uber Canada. “Uber Canada welcomes the opportunity to partner with Breakfast Club of Canada and support the families in need.”

“Since schools were shuttered across Canada, we have continued to team up with our partners to ensure kids get enough to eat,” said Tommy Kulczyk, Managing Director of Breakfast Club of Canada. “Their needs are on the rise. We have to keep helping one another. The fact that a company like Uber is offering this delivery service and making sure food gets to families who need it is a wonderful act of kindness.”

Uber has pledged over M in free rides, meals, and food deliveries for healthcare workers, seniors, and people in need across Canada. To encourage safety and cleanliness throughout the delivery process, Uber drivers have passed a background check and have been given clear instructions from public health officials about cleaning and disinfection products.

Breakfast Club of Canada set up an emergency fund on March 20 to lend a helping hand to schools and organizations working on the ground, after breakfast programs were suspended in light of school closures. More than 1,000 funding applications have been received thus far from hundreds of organizations and schools from coast to coast. Donations to Breakfast Club of Canada can be made through their website.

Government of Canada announces multimillion-dollar funding package to ensure children and families have access to food during this crisis

Montréal, April 3, 2020 – Today, the Government of Canada took an important step to protect our children and families who are currently facing food insecurity by announcing 0 million in relief for the Canadians who need it most.

million has been allocated to Breakfast Club of Canada through Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada to support breakfast program enrollees and local community organizations that assist food-insecure families.

“Since this crisis began, Breakfast Club of Canada and multiple partners across the country have been working tirelessly to ensure kids who depend on school meal programs have access to healthy food during the pandemic,’’ said Daniel Germain, President and Founder of Breakfast Club of Canada. ‘’The mass mobilization and acts of solidarity we have seen on the ground in the face of such challenging times is truly awe-inspiring and makes me incredibly proud to call myself a Canadian. Today’s million commitment from the federal government will allow Breakfast Club of Canada for the next few weeks to continue working with collaborators to feed kids and support the families who need it most.’’

While hundreds of thousands of students usually depend on the Club and its partners for a healthy breakfast every school morning, the total number of children and youth across the country affected by food insecurity is actually greater than 1 million. COVID-19 has hit the most vulnerable Canadians the hardest, and these families and communities require dedicated support during these challenging times to ensure that no child goes hungry.

Our front-line team members, dedicated volunteers and hundreds of community organizations are working around the clock to make sure families don’t have to worry about where their next meal is coming from.

To combat this crisis, Breakfast Club of Canada has created an online emergency relief fund to help families access the funding they need to be administered through a Special Grants Initiative. Individuals can access this initiative through an online portal, located on Breakfast Club of Canada’s website, specifically designed for the COVID-19 crisis.

As the world waits for things to settle, hunger continues and there is no safe place for children to ride out the storm. Alongside our partners, allied organizations and today’s investment from the federal government we will all strive to ensure no child or family faces food insecurity during COVID-19.

Long-time BCC ambassadors committed to helping food-insecure children across the country have access to healthy nutrition during the COVID-19 crisis

Montreal, March 23, 2020 – Dedicated Breakfast Club of Canada ambassadors Carey and Angela Price have generously announced a ,000 donation from their Foundation to the Club’s emergency fund to help feed children across Canada during the COVID-19 crisis. The Price family has been involved with the Club for over five years through a variety of initiatives including Shooting for the Stars, an event created in collaboration with the Air Canada Foundation that lets children from Indigenous communities enjoy an incredible week-long experience in Montreal with their hockey hero, and an annual fundraiser of the same name held in Kelowna, B.C. – which to date has raised more than 0,000 to support the Club’s mission.

“We are lucky to have everything we do, when so many people lack access to healthy food. We feel compelled to do our part so that the most vulnerable children and communities in the country, including Indigenous communities, aren’t victims of food insecurity during this crisis,” said Angela Price.

“It’s incredible to be able to count on the support of the Carey and Angela Price Foundation. They’ve been so generous to Breakfast Club of Canada over the years, and this shows once again how invested they are in our mission. I sincerely hope that Angela and Carey’s act of generosity will inspire others to do the same,” said Daniel Germain, President and Founder of Breakfast Club of Canada.

Some 250,000 students usually depend on the Club and its partners for a healthy breakfast every school morning, but the total number of children and youth across the country affected by food insecurity is a greater than 1 million.

At least  million is required to meet the needs of Canadian children and families immediately.

To help minimize the repercussions of this crisis on families in need, the Club is supporting local community organizations, who need more financial support than ever, as extra precautions drastically increase the cost of providing each meal.

The Club is calling on the community and corporate partners to help support children in this time of need. For those looking to join the Price family in contributing to the emergency fund, donations can be made through the Club’s website here, or by texting CLUB to 20222 to make a or donation.

To minimize the impact of the COVID-19 crisis on this vulnerable segment of the population, the Club will be issuing special grants through this emergency fund, which community organizations looking for support for their food programs can apply for here.

The emergency fund will:

At least million required to meet the needs of Canadian children quickly and efficiently

Montreal, March 20, 2020 – Backed by its network of corporate partners, Breakfast Club of Canada is setting up an emergency fund to support breakfast program enrollees and local community organizations that assist food-insecure families and children throughout Canada during the COVID-19 crisis.

Some 250,000 students usually depend on the Club and its partners for a healthy breakfast every school morning, but the total number of children and youth across the country affected by food insecurity is actually greater than 1 million. To help minimize the repercussions of this crisis on them, Breakfast Club of Canada is reallocating the funds normally earmarked for schools to high-risk regions and established partners that are already well equipped to serve them.

In order to be able to address the needs of children for as long as possible during the crisis, Breakfast Club of Canada is turning to its corporate partners and the general public for help.

A number of partners have already stepped forward and announced a contribution to the Club’s emergency fund: belairdirect and Intact insurance 0k, Danone 0k and Kellogg Canada 0k. Other partners such as Sodexo – Stop Hunger Foundation also have offered their support.

Anyone who wants to contribute to the emergency fund can do so through the Club’s website.

Breakfast Club of Canada invites community organizations that wish to apply for a special grant to fill out an online application.

The emergency fund will:

  • Focus on food-insecure households with children across Canada, including those in Indigenous communities
  • Target high-need neighbourhoods
  • Be administered in collaboration with respected community organizations that are familiar with and rigorously apply hygiene and sanitation measures associated with handling food as well as the requirements developed by public health authorities to control the spread of COVID-19.

For the sixth year in a row, Shooting for the Stars treats three lucky children to a week-long lineup of special activities

Montreal, March 3, 2020 – Young people sometimes need a helping hand to achieve their full potential and see just how far their dreams can carry them. That is precisely why Breakfast Club of Canada and the Air Canada Foundation joined forces for the sixth consecutive year to give three children from Indigenous communities in British Columbia the opportunity to experience an extraordinary week. Kameron, Kimora and Trey crossed the country to explore Montreal and meet Carey and Angela Price, paragons of perseverance and Breakfast Club of Canada ambassadors.

During their stay, the trio visited a number of popular attractions, including La Grande Roue de Montréal and the Montreal Science Centre, and were given a guided tour of the Bell Centre. They also enjoyed some very special moments with Carey and Angela Price, both on the ice and after the game on February 27.

Highlights:

  • Carey Price hails from the Ulkatcho First Nation in Anahim Lake, British Columbia. He believes in the importance of giving back to youth from his community. He and his wife, Angela, make it a point to take the time to inspire youth to push beyond their limits and dream big.
  • For Breakfast Club of Canada and the Air Canada Foundation, nourishing children is about more than making sure they get a healthy breakfast every morning: it’s about giving them the energy they need to fulfill their potential in a caring, stimulating environment.
  • While they were in Montreal, Kameron, Kimora and Trey were able to watch Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens in action at the Bell Centre on February 27, from the comfort of the Air Canada loge.
  • Indigenous communities have been a priority for Breakfast Club of Canada for many years. Currently, 269 schools and 31,157 children in Indigenous communities across the country are served by the Club and its partners.

Available for interviews:

  • Angela Price, Breakfast Club of Canada ambassador
  • Tommy Kulczyk, General Manager, Breakfast Club of Canada
  • Valérie Durand, Air Canada Foundation Spokesperson

Quotes:

“We feel privileged to be able to make our dreams come true every day. By taking part in the Shooting for the Stars event for the past six years, we’ve been able to tell children that nothing is impossible if you keep at it. Children from Indigenous communities may need to hear this message more often, and we gladly share it with them, year after year.”
Angela and Carey Price, Breakfast Club of Canada ambassadors

“At Breakfast Club of Canada, we work every day to maximize children’s chances of taking their dreams to the next level. Partners like the Air Canada Foundation are how we make this happen. We also rely on the contributions of ambassadors like Angela and Carey Price, who place a high priority on children and their success.”
— Tommy Kulczyk, General Manager, Breakfast Club of Canada

“For the Air Canada Foundation, nothing is more important than children’s wellbeing and helping them dream big. Shooting for the Stars is an opportunity to create a special experience for children who deserve to feel inspired and to explore what the future could hold for them. Beyond this trip, we encourage them to persevere in everything they undertake and to reach their full potential.”

BUSINESS AND COMMUNITY PARTNERS WORK TOGETHER TO BETTER THE LIVES OF LOCAL CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Prince Rupert, BC – February 25, 2020 – Today, thanks to the joint efforts of Pembina Pipeline Corporation, the Prince Rupert Port Authority, Ridley Terminals, Breakfast Club of Canada and School District No. 52, 225 children and youth will enjoy a nutritious breakfast every school morning.  Collectively, these organizations have made it possible for students from Prince Rupert Middle School, Charles Hays Secondary School and Roosevelt Park Elementary School to start their day nourished, energized and ready to learn.

A breakfast program is more than providing a healthy meal; it is a way to unite communities around the success of their children and youth. The Club believes it is essential to take time to educate students on proper nutrition and the impact it has on their actions. Recently, at Prince Rupert Middle School, they have successfully eliminated the use of disposable dishes and cutlery, thus educating students about the importance of sustainability.

Highlights:

  • Three breakfast programs in School District No. 52 have started at Prince Rupert Middle School, Charles Hays Secondary School and Roosevelt Park Elementary School. These programs will feed 225 children and youth every morning.
  • Across Canada, after a breakfast program has been established, school principals have reported lower absenteeism, improved attention span and fewer health-related problems.
  • More than 8,800 young British Columbians currently have access to a breakfast program at school. Breakfast Club of Canada supports 181 breakfast programs in the province, 50 of which are in schools with an Indigenous population of 40% or higher.

Quotes:

“Breakfast Club of Canada firmly believes in the importance of joining forces with partners across all sectors of society to benefit the next generation. We can all do good by our kids, whether it’s by giving of our time, money, food or influence. This project is an amazing testament to what we can accomplish together.
