Before the spread COVID-19, more than 1 million Canadian children were affected by food insecurity. Now, the current crisis is putting even more pressure on the families of these children.
We have created an emergency fund to support Breakfast Club of Canada children and local community organizations that assist food-insecure families…and we need your help to #FeedKidsNow. At least $5 million is required to meet the needs of Canadian children quickly and efficiently. Please contribute, if you can, and spread the word on social media with the hashtag #FeedKidsNow.
Breakfast Club of Canada is working with likeminded organizations, schools and school districts across the country to help meet the needs of children & families who face food insecurity and ensure that there is as little disruption as possible in the delivery of nutritious food to those in need.
We are collaborating with food banks and other local resources to help distribute “grab & go” bags containing basic food items.
Drop-off zones have been identified and communicated through school districts, so families know when and where to access these pick-up locations.
These bags will be distributed in a way that encourages social distancing and prevents unnecessary congregation.
We are issuing grants to community organizations that aim to support:
-Canadian families facing food insecurity (specifically families with with school-aged children)
-High-need neighbourhoods across Canada
-Indigenous, remote and fly-in communities
We are also offering grants to local organizations that provide gift cards for food purchases.
We are collecting requests from organizations, schools and school district across Canada and hope to fund as many as we can.
We are staying in touch with local agencies to assess needs and we are reaching out to likeminded organizations, like No Kid Hungry in the United States, to share best practices and find new solutions as the situation evolves.
We are actively seeking intel and advice from families and the agencies that support them, so our funding can be responsive to Canadians who face food insecurity.
We don’t know how long this pandemic will affect us, or how long schools will be closed. Regardless of this uncertainty, we are committed to our mission of helping children and families in need.
Together, we’ll fight to ensure no child or family faces food insecurity.
