Behind every breakfast, moments that set the tone for the day
Each morning, before the children walk through the doors, a small group of volunteers gets to work preparing breakfast, which will make all the difference at an elementary school in Quebec City.
To mark National Volunteer Week, let’s explore what lies behind this simple yet essential gesture through the experiences of Dominic and Maxime, volunteers at Beausoleil-et-du-Parc School.
A routine that makes all the difference
It’s 6:15 a.m. Dominic, who has been volunteering for about 15 years, arrives at the school with his usual team. Everyone takes on a role: some handle the fruits and vegetables, while others take care of the main dish. While the tables are cleaned and set, glasses of water and milk are poured, and the volunteers flash their brightest smiles.
When the children arrive, the morning comes alive. The youngest children get help eating their breakfast, and every smile shared becomes a precious moment.
“The children’s laughter, greetings and cheerful interactions make every morning a joy. We take care of them as if they were our own kids,” says Maxime, a young professional who is in his second year of volunteering with the program.
A tangible impact on children
For many children, this breakfast is more than just a meal. It’s a time for sharing, fun and a sense of security. Dominic explains:
“For some, the Club is essential. It’s their most nutritious meal of the day. The program really makes a difference in their lives!”
Maxime adds:
“The kids really enjoy the program, and they keep coming back. Sometimes they ask for more than one serving. They start their day with fruit and high-quality protein. It also helps create bonds between the kids, and that really makes a difference.”
Impactful actions
Every little gesture creates lasting memories. “Even after all this time, I still run into young adults who remember me and thank me for those wonderful years at the Club. It shows just how much of a positive impact the program has on the kids,” says Dominic.
National Volunteer Week is an opportunity to thank Dominic, Maxime and all the volunteers, who, every morning, help ensure that the children start their day on a positive and well‑balanced note. Their passion, energy and generosity turn simple gestures into unforgettable memories, making their breakfast program a moment of joy and togetherness for everyone.
