Every year in Quebec, Hooked on School Days remind us of an essential truth: academic success is built day by day. For this year’s celebration, we had the opportunity to experience that truth first-hand through a very special activity. Players from the Concordia Stingers hockey team paid a visit to Westmount Park Elementary School, where they served breakfast to students, answered their questions and shared their own stories of perseverance.

Several Stingers helped prepare and distribute breakfast at the school, giving students a nourishing and inspiring experience. They also answered their questions and shared some of their own experiences. Through their stories of determination and discipline, they showed how perseverance is a key skill for academic success.

Forge ahead even when it’s tough

For Christopher Inniss, a finance student, perseverance is a muscle he’s developed as much by playing hockey as by hitting the books. As he so aptly put it:

“Perseverance means continuing to move forward even when things are difficult, tiring or discouraging.”

His journey is proof of this. Juggling exams, practice and travel is no easy feat, but he’s learned to stay disciplined, keep a routine and above all, celebrate small daily victories.

Challenges build character

For Rachael McIntyre, a therapeutic recreation student, obstacles have often taken the form of injuries.

“I’ve had to deal with several injuries during my hockey seasons and find the resilience to overcome those challenges.”

Her definition of perseverance reflects her state of mind:

“For me, it’s a combination of being optimistic and disciplined, and always trying to find the positive in life.”

This message really resonated with the students, especially those facing their own challenges, whether big or small.

To see results, you have to put in the effort

Mathieu Bizier, an athletic therapy student, pointed out that perseverance isn’t just about talent, but about attitude. He explained:

“For me, perseverance, both in the classroom and in the rink, means always giving 110% regardless of the challenges or obstacles I may face along the way.”

He also shared a memorable moment for him: a session where he was taking five classes while in the playoffs. After getting a bad grade on an exam, he had to work twice as hard to get back on track. This was a concrete example that even university athletes have moments of doubt, and that they overcome them through discipline and the support of those around them.

Believe in yourself, even when it’s scary

Angélie Jobin, a human resource management student, shared a story that took the students by surprise. She told them about choosing to attend an English-language CEGEP even though she didn’t speak English!

“I bought myself an English book and highlighted every word I didn’t understand. I read 30 books that year.”

This wonderful display of determination inspired the students not to be intimidated by what they haven’t yet perfected.

Stay on track with your goals

For Alexandre Nadeau, a finance student, the answer is simple:

“It really helps me to always have a goal. In some situations, setting myself shorter-term goals can help me regain my motivation more quickly through small wins.”

He also said that perseverance means “not letting up, even in the face of obstacles.”

That message struck a chord with several students who also juggle busy schedules.

Step up your efforts when it counts

Finally, Simon Lavigne, a finance student, shared a very clear vision of perseverance:

“I always keep my eye on my goals and why I want to accomplish certain things, even if it’s difficult. In more challenging times, I focus on the end result.”

His journey, which has been marked by winning a gold medal at the International University Sports Federation World University Games with Team Canada, clearly shows that determination pays off in the end.

A memorable event for everyone

At Westmount Park Elementary, the students discovered that behind every Stingers jersey lies a story of hard work, doubt, passion and courage.

The players were reminded of what really matters: the importance of giving back, sharing their experiences and being accessible role models for the next generation.

Hooked on Learning Days aren’t just about celebrating success. They’re about celebrating the path you take to get there. And this year, thanks to the Stingers, that path was illuminated by genuine, deeply human and truly inspiring stories.
