When a Breakfast Changes So Much More Than a Morning
Behind every breakfast program are human stories that show its impact on daily life. We’re talking parents, volunteers, and community members who get involved to help children start each morning on a more level playing field.
That’s the case for Émilie, a dedicated volunteer who gives her time to her son Philippe’s breakfast program. We’re shining the spotlight on a mother’s perspective as she shares how the program has supported her child’s integration, while transforming her own experience as a parent and volunteer at the school.
How School Breakfast Programs Support Children’s School Integration and Belonging
What made you want to get involved as a volunteer at your son’s school?
At first, it was a desire to be a part of his surroundings. But then when I witnessed what was happening in the mornings, I became deeply moved. Seeing so many people getting involved—whether it was school staff volunteering their time on top of their jobs or community members like parents and retirees—is truly beautiful.
What role did the breakfast program play in helping your son settle into his new school?
The breakfast program has been like a gentle, predictable way to each morning. He finds a lively, welcoming space where children naturally gather to build connections and start each day off right.
Have you noticed any changes in your son—socially, emotionally, or academically—thanks to the program?
Absolutely, in every way! Emotionally, our mornings have gone from a stressful rush to a positive routine. Socially, he’s gained a lot of confidence and independence. Academically, he and the other students have the chance to start their day with more mental space to focus on learning.
Why School Breakfast Programs Matter From the Very First School Mornings
Was there a specific moment when you thought to yourself, “This program really makes a difference”?
From the very first morning of volunteering, seeing the smiles and the joy the children feel when sharing breakfast as a group was eye-opening. It goes beyond just feeding the kids; it contributes to their overall development. You know the saying, “It takes a village to raise a child”? The breakfast program is an integral part of that famous village.
Seeing School Breakfast Programs From the Inside: Dignity, Connection, and Trust
As a mother, what does it mean to you to know that your son starts his day with breakfast at school?
It’s a huge relief and one less thing to worry about. I know he starts his day in a safe environment, supervised by caring adults, and that he gets a nutritious meal that will sustain him until snack time and lunch. It’s a true team effort between the school, the Club, and the parents.
How has your perspective on the program changed since you’ve seen it from the inside, as a volunteer?
I’ve come to realize that we serve much more than just food: we serve dignity, a listening ear, and encouraging smiles. For some young people, our “good morning” is the first positive interaction of their day. The bond of trust that forms between the volunteers and the students is beautiful.
Building Equal Opportunity, One Breakfast at a Time
Why do you believe so strongly in the Club’s cause today?
Not all children have the same circumstances at home. Providing breakfast at school ensures that every child starts the day on an equal footing.
It’s a concrete way to support academic success and reduce inequality. I dream of a day when every school will have its own breakfast program.
