Looking to avoid food waste in your breakfast program? Want to ensure that your fruits and veggies stay fresher and tastier for longer? Here are eight great ideas on how to make the most of your produce!

 

  1. Remove any elastic bands from your vegetables after buying them. They can damage and break vegetables, especially leafy ones.
  2. Remove leaves from your root vegetables (radishes, carrots, parsnips, beets, etc.). Leaves tend to absorb all the water and decrease the shelf life of root vegetables.
  3. Punch holes in the plastic wrap of vegetables that come in trays to let them breathe. You may have noticed that the plastic wrap on mushrooms, for example, is already perforated. This helps prevent them from becoming slimy.
  4. Put your bananas in the fridge before they are too ripe. Their peels may turn black, but the fruit inside will stop ripening. You can make delicious banana slices now or store them in the freezer for subsequent use.
  5. Freeze your leftover fruit and use it later. Any fruit can be frozen. Tip: Spread the fruit or fruit pieces out on a large baking sheet and put in the freezer for an hour. Then transfer to an airtight container to store. This way, the individual pieces will freeze separately, so if you need a certain quantity, you won’t have to defrost the whole batch. Frozen fruit can be added to yogurt, porridge, muffins, smoothies — anything!
  6. Add lime or lemon juice to your fruit salad to keep it fresh. This will stop the fruit from browning and keep your salad appetizing.
  7. Put a paper towel at the bottom of berry containers to absorb moisture. This will increase the shelf life of your berries and prevent the formation of mould.
  8. Freeze any “ugly” fruit and make compote out of it when you have enough. This works with apples, pears, peaches, berries or an assorted mix! Check out our cookbook for a simple berry compote recipe that can easily be adapted to any fruit you have on hand.

Boucherville, April 14, 2022 – This morning, at the Hôtel Mortagne, in compliance with local sanitary measures, hundreds of people from the educational and business communities took part in the 16th edition of the Déjeuner des Grands event. As life continues to be marked by the effects of the pandemic and rising food prices, people in Quebec continue to demonstrate their dedication to the cause and be present for the well-being of children.

 

The event, which returned in person this year, was held in the form of a morning show hosted by Benoît Gagnon, radio host and Club ambassador, celebrating 25 years with the organization. Several special guests and Club ambassadors participated, including Geneviève Everell, author, speaker, CEO and chef-owner of Sushi à la maison, Laurent Paquin, comedian, Thomas Nepveu, professional karting driver, Philippe Langlois, founder and owner of Philippe & Co. and the group 2Frères who put on a musical performance.

 

“It is events like this that make me particularly proud to have been a Breakfast Club of Canada ambassador for the past 25 years,” explains Benoît Gagnon. “Seeing the community come together and rally around the cause is something really special. As a father, I am very proud to be part of this important event.”

 

The event brought together participants from all regions of Quebec with the goal of giving children the energy they need to learn. An impressive total of $85,946 was raised this year thanks to the generosity of all the participants.

 

In order to shine a light on the realities and the challenges that the Club faces, Benoît Gagnon welcomed Tommy Kulczyk, President and CEO of Breakfast Club of Canada to discuss the issues, the growing needs and the positive impacts of breakfast programs.

 

“In Quebec, the Club reaches more than 67,000 children in over 480 programs each day, but the needs continue to grow,” said Tommy Kulczyk. “The Club wants to ensure that it can continue to reach the considerable number of children who currently benefit from a breakfast program and extend its reach. The goal is to provide constant support and help children achieve their full potential. It is by working together with our important partners, donors, volunteers and other stakeholders that we will achieve this.”

Breakfast Club of Canada is looking for a Corporate & Community Giving Coordinator. Reporting to the Corporate & Community Giving Lead – Quebec, the selected candidate will work closely with the Philanthropy team, providing support for donor outreach and event planning.

 

In addition to analyzing and helping respond to incoming fundraising-related enquiries, they will work toward building and maintaining long-term relationships with businesses and other members of the community that express an interest in supporting BCC through their initiatives.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Fundraising support and donor outreach:
  • Coordinate the various tasks involved in small and mid-sized fundraising efforts
  • Oversee and diligently follow up on each of the steps in the cycle of assigned fundraising activities
  • Prepare deliveries of materials sent to donors
  • Provide technical support and guidance to donors using BCC’s P2P online platform for their fundraising efforts and ensure they have all the tools they need
  • Help re-engage lapsed donors in order to leverage fundraising opportunities
  • Represent BCC at various fundraising events in Quebec
  • Monitor trends in the philanthropy and fundraising landscape

 

Administrative support:
  • Help draft memorandums of understanding and confirmation letters
  • Handle incoming calls and emails as needed and/or direct to the appropriate team member
  • Make thank-you and solicitation calls
  • Keep records and produce summaries and official reports regularly and as needed
  • Ensure donor information is properly managed in the database
  • Seek out in-kind partners to meet event-related needs
  • Work in conjunction with other departments to bring assigned fundraising activities to a successful conclusion

 

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in administration, marketing or a related field
  • One to three years of relevant experience
  • Fluency in written and spoken French and English
  • Project management skills
  • Knowledge of philanthropy, an asset
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and ability to learn new applications quickly
  • Familiarity with CRM platforms (knowledge of Salesforce, an asset)
  • Valid driver’s licence and access to a vehicle
  • Availability to work outside of regular business hours to help with events (evenings and weekends)

Boucherville – April 7, 2022 – Today, the Government of Canada renewed its commitment to working in the coming year with provinces, territories, municipalities, Indigenous partners and other stakeholders to develop a National School Nutritious Meal Program. The Club welcomes this mention in Federal Budget 2022, which marks another step towards a future where no child starts their day on an empty stomach.

Breakfast Club of Canada is looking to hire a Relational Marketing Coordinator to contribute to the organization’s Canada-wide growth.

 

Reporting to the Relational Marketing Senior Advisor, the successful candidate will help develop and maintain relationships with individual Breakfast Club of Canada donors. This person will participate actively in implementing marketing strategies, measure the outcomes and stay up to date on best practices in the area of philanthropy.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Coordinate writing, production and sending of personalized monthly newsletters.
  • Leverage the CRM to configure donor segmentation and create automated processes.
  • Participate in optimizing the database usage and individual donors’ data collection.
  • Participate in the acquisition, conversion, engagement, and retention initiatives for individual donors.
  • Work in close collaboration with the programs’ team to develop personalized content (testimonials, impactful stories, etc.).
  • Generate and analyze database reports to track donation trends and identify development opportunities.
  • Carry out administrative tasks related to the position (produce monthly reports, draft select documents, create and send newsletters, develop lists, coordinate mailouts).
  • Help assess the effectiveness of selected marketing tactics.
  • Stay informed of the latest industry trends.
  • Respond to telephone and email inquiries related to marketing initiatives and oversee communication with current and prospective donors with professionalism and courtesy.

 

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • University degree in marketing, business administration, communications or a related discipline.
  • One to three years of experience in a marketing field and/or in philanthropy.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and French.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) and an aptitude for learning new applications quickly.
  • Knowledge of CRM platforms (Salesforce, an asset), Google Analytics and Mailchimp or another email marketing program, an asset.

For Nutrition Month, Breakfast Club of Canada has teamed up with child nutritionist Mélanie Magnan (nutrimini.com) to bring you a simple, irresistible breakfast recipe that kids and parents alike are bound to love. One of Mélanie’s mantras is “Healthy eating should be fun.” Mission accomplished!

 

Breakfast pizza ingrediants

Ingredients (for 1 pizza)
  • 1 mini watermelon disc, about 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter, sliced approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick
  • ½ c. (125 mL) vanilla-flavoured Greek yogurt
  • ½ kiwi, sliced
  • 1 or 2 strawberries, sliced
  • 12 a dozen fresh blueberries
  • ¼ c. (60 mL) mixed granola
  • 1–2 Tbsp. (15 mL–30 mL) desiccated coconut

 

Preparation
  • Spread half of the yogurt on top of the disc.
  • Top with kiwi, strawberries and blueberries.
  • Sprinkle granola and coconut over top.
  • Serve with the remaining yogurt on the side.
